Trump picks South Carolina congressman as budget director

A Tea Party Republican and fiscal hard-liner is Donald Trump’s nominee as director of the Office of Management and Budget, the president-elect announced Saturday.
Congressman Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina, 49, was elected in 2010 with a wave of small-government, tough-on-spending conservatives.
“With Mick at the head of OMB, my administration is going to make smart choices about America’s budget, bring new accountability to our federal government, and renew the American taxpayers’ trust in how their money is spent,” Trump said in an early-morning statement.
‘“Right now we are nearly $20 trillion in debt, but Mick is a very high-energy leader with deep convictions for how to responsibly manage our nation’s finances and save our country from drowning in red ink,” Trump said.
Mulvaney co-founded of the House Freedom Caucus, a group that helped push former Speaker John Boehner out of office and has been a thorn in the side of current Speaker Paul Ryan.
He is a member of the House Financial Services Committee and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
The OMB produces the president’s annual budget proposal to Congress and oversees major regulations. The director’s post requires Senate confirmation.
Mulvaney has routinely voted against increasing the government’s borrowing cap and pressed for major cuts to benefit programs to balancing the federal budget.
“The Trump administration will restore budgetary and fiscal sanity back in Washington after eight years of an out-of-control, tax and spend financial agenda, and will work with Congress to create policies that will be friendly to American workers and businesses,” Mulvaney said Saturday.
