Manchester United appear set to clinch the signing of Swedish defender Victor Lindelof, with The Times reporting a deal is close.
Lindelof would help patch up what had until recently appeared a backline lacking depth, and he will cost a staggering £42 million.
United were not the only club interested in the 22-year-old, far from it.In fact as recently as just one month ago, Lindelof was being linked with Championship big guns Aston Villa.
Villa are being blown out of the water with regards to Lindelof's signature, and from a competitive standpoint they cannot offer what United can.
The Birmingham Mail reported just last month that Villa have sent scouts this season to watch him in action.
HITC reported in October that bookies Bet Victor even had Villa priced at just 8/1 to sign the centre-back.Clearly there is nothing Villa can do about Lindelof's profile increasing, agents pushing deals in a particular direction, and Manchester United coming in with a huge offer. It demonstrates that Villa's scouts are looking in the right direction, at young talent with potential to be great, and after recently swinging and missing on a host of poor signings in the summer of 2015, fans should take it as encouraging.
Now their scouts simply have to step up and ensure the other players they are tracking prove just as good, and with a bit of luck, Manchester United won't be eyeing them up too.
