Father John Misty unveiled a new song that appeared to make opaque references to Donald Trump's victory in the recent presidential election and the liberal distress that followed. "Damn, the future ain't lookin' so bright," Misty sings on the shabby piano ballad "Holy Hell." "Never asked for a paradise/ But 70 years would be nice."Though he doesn't call out Trump by name, the president-elect's presence seems to peek through in lines like, "The economy just don't explain this, this unfathomable, nameless rift/ Who knows if it even exists/ It's just some highly effective rhetoric/ Used by perverts who get off on it."
In the song's final couplet, Misty pivots towards hope, telling his listeners that they are in charge of their own destiny. "The world won't end unless we want it to," he declares. "There's no one in control, it's our life to choose."
Misty's last album, I Love You, Honeybear, came out in 2015. He appeared this year on the Avalanches' "Saturday Night Inside Out" and also released a pair of his own new songs, "Real Love Baby" and "This Is America."
