Green Party's Jill Stein Files for Recount in Wisconsin

The Green Party’s presidential candidate Jill Stein filed a petition for a recount in Wisconsin on Friday, which is expected to begin late next week, according to a statement released by the Wisconsin Elections Commission.

“The Commission is preparing to move forward with a statewide recount of votes for President of the United States, as requested by these candidates,” Wisconsin Elections Commission’s Administrator Michael Haas said in the statement.

The Commission received two separate recount petitions, one from Jill Stein’s presidential campaign and the other from Rocky Roque De La Fuente, who created the American Delta Party for his 2016 presidential campaign.

Green Party officials filed following reports of voting discrepancies and are seeking a deeper investigation into the election results. Wisconsin’s electoral votes went to Donald Trump on Election Night.

Stein told CNN‘s John Berman on Thursday that “there were attempts made broadly on state voter databases and we know that we have an election system that relies a computer system that is wide to open hacks.”

“It’s extremely vulnerable,” she continued. “Americans deserve to have confidence in our vote.”

Stein has raised more than $5 million to pay for recounts in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. The Green Party’s initial goal was to raise $2 million, but as of Friday, that goal was raised to $7 million, according to CNN.

President-elect Donald Trump had victories in Pennsylvania and Michigan, which were states he need to win the presidency.

Wisconsin is working under a federal deadline of Dec. 13 to complete the recount. As a result, Haas said county employees may need to work evenings and weekends to meet deadlines.

“The recount process is very detail-oriented, and this deadline will certainly challenge some counties to finish on time,” he said in the statement.

An internal team was assembled in Wisconsin to direct the recount, according to Haas, who said legal representation has been arranged by the Wisconsin Department of Justice. The Commission was also calculating the recount fee.
