'Land of Mine' actor Louis Hofmann, 'Afterimage' star Zofia Wichlacz and Italian actor Alessandro Borghi are among the 10 young talents picked for the annual actors showcase.
European Film Promotion has announced its European Shooting Stars, the group's annual list of the 10 young actors to watch from across the 28 countries of the European Union.
For its 20th edition, which will be held during the 2017 Berlin Film Festival, EFP has picked 6 young actresses and 4 actors mainly from Northern and Eastern Europe. Unusually, the 2017 list does not include a single actor from the U.K., France or Spain.
Instead, the group features 19-year-old German actor Louis Hofmann, who impressed as a solider conscripted to clear land mines off the Danish coast in Oscar contender Land of Mine; 21-year-old Polish actress Zofia Wichlacz, star of Afterimage, the last film of the late, great Andrzej Wajda; and 22-year-old Latvian actress Elina Vaska, who made her debut in Mellow Mud, which won the Crystal Bear for best film in the Generation 14plus section in Berlin this year.
Other 2017 Shooting Stars include Alessandro Borghi, star of the 2015 Venice Festival entry Don't Be Bad; Dutch actress Hannah Hoekstra, winner of best actress honors at both the Netherlands and Montreal film festivals this year for her performance as a sharp-tongued germophobe in Andre van Duren's The Fury; Tudor Aaron Istodor from Romanian, who appeared this year in Fanny Ardant-directed Le divan de Staline; and Sweden's Karin Franz Korlof, star of Pernilla August's latest, A Serious Game. Marusa Majer from Slovenia, Denmark's Esben Smed and Portuguese actress Victoria Guerra complete the top ten.
The Shooting Stars were picked by a professional jury that included Batman Begins casting director Lucinda Syson, Swiss director Xavier Koller, Portuguese producer Pandora da Cunha Telles, Swedish film critic Jan Lumholdt and former Shooting Star Dorka Gryllus from Hungary.
The Shooting Stars will attend the Berlin Film Festival, which runs Feb. 9-19, to meet with agents, producers and directors. They will all receive the Shooting Stars award at a gala ceremony at the Berlinale Palast on Monday, Feb. 13, 2017.
