Roy Hodgson has revealed that he doesn’t hold a grudge against Sam Allardyce after his successor as England manager mocked his speech impediment.
Footage captured by undercover journalists from the Telegraph showed Allardyce referring to Hodgson as “Woy” while the former England manager also stated that his predecessor was to tedious for public speaking.
Hodgson told BBC Radio 5 Live on Sunday: “I didn’t realise I had a speech impediment until I came back to England.
“I spent the whole of my life working abroad with no one mentioning it, and as soon as I came back to England I suddenly found out I had a speech impediment.
“I don’t think anything’s cruel. If you’re so sensitive these days that you see cruelty everywhere, then unfortunately every time a comedian comes on the television you’re going to accuse him of cruelty because that’s the type of humour the English people enjoy.
“I suppose I was aware of it, but nothing like to the extent of the first newspaper headline or [England successor Sam] Allardyce’s recent impersonation.”
Hodgson’s England tenure ended in misery as the Three Lions were eliminated by Iceland at Euro 2016, while Allardyce’s spell in charge of the national team was rather short-lived as he was removed from his position after it was revealed that he provided information on how to get around FA rules regarding the third-party ownership of players.
Gareth Southgate, who was previously in charge of the U21 side, is now the England manager on a full-time basis, while Hodgson, who has vast experience of coaching in various countries, recently stated his intention to manage again having been out of work since the summer.
