Fox News strategic analyst Lt. Col. Ralph Peters (Ret.) said this morning that President-elect Donald Trump could be getting "suckered" by Russia.
Trump's selection for secretary of state, Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson, is being criticized for his business ties to Moscow, which awarded him the Order of Friendship decoration in 2012.
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said this morning that he views Tillerson's "friendship" with Russian President Vladimir Putin as an issue.
Peters echoed the concerns of McCain and other lawmakers, arguing that he does not trust anyone who has done "mega-billion dollar" business deals with Putin.
"I think [Tillerson] is what the Russians call a 'useful idiot.' Someone who puts the profit motive above the welfare of the United States. You can't do business with Putin's Russia without getting dirty. It can't be done. I want to see someone who puts America's interests in front of those of Exxon Mobil. Sorry," he said.
Peters said he favors many of the cabinet picks that have been announced, but cautioned that Trump's stance toward Russia won't work. He called on Trump to "at least" criticize Moscow's bombing of hospitals and clinics in Syria.
Asked about Tillerson on "Fox News Sunday," Trump called him "much more than a business executive" and a "world-class player."
