President-elect Donald Trump is to nominate retired neurosurgeon, Dr. Ben Carson, to serve as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, the New York Post reported on Monday.
“I am honored to accept the opportunity to serve our country in the Trump administration,” Dr. Carson, a retired pediatric neurosurgeon, said in a press release.“I feel that I can make a significant contribution particularly by strengthening communities that are most in need. We have much work to do in enhancing every aspect of our nation and ensuring that our nation’s housing needs are met,” Carson added.
Carson, 65, once ran against the President-elect in the Republican primary. He was one of the sixteen other candidates that was beaten by Trump.
However, he was the first among his competitors to endorse Trump for president, becoming one of his top advisers and surrogates.
When sharing the news of Carson’s nomination, Trump said that he was “brilliant” and “passionate.”
“Ben Carson has a brilliant mind and is passionate about strengthening communities and families within those communities. We have talked at length about my urban renewal agenda and our message of economic revival, very much including our inner cities,” Trump said Monday in announcing Carson’s appointment.“Ben shares my optimism about the future of our country and is part of ensuring that this is a presidency representing all Americans. He is a tough competitor and never gives up,” Trump added.
