Turkey: Police Make 18 Arrests Over Checkpoint Attack

TURKISH police arrested 18 people yesterday in connection with Thursday’s attack on a police checkpoint in the southern city of Izmir.
Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag claimed authorities had no doubt that the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) “gave the orders” for the attack.
The two assailants were killed in a shootout with police in Turkey’s third largest city after they detonated an explosives-laden vehicle, killing a policeman and a worker at a nearby court.
Mr Bozdag spoke before thousands of people at a memorial service for the slain police officer, Fethi Sekin, who authorities say thwarted a larger attack.
Meanwhile Jordan’s official Petra news agency said 12 people would be charged for posting online abuse at the victims of the Isis attack on a New Year’s Eve nightclub party in Istanbul.
The offences included inciting hatred, targeting the victim’s families and expressing support for the attack which claimed the lives of 39 people and wounded 70 others.
